Grade 2 National Finals, and National Synchro Finals 2006

Kingston Kites are flying high!

(MK Citizen Article 19th Dec 2006)

Just one week before the cream of the worlds trampolinists descended on Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena for the Trampoline World Cup Finals, our own home grown talent was on display at the 2006 National Synchro and Garde 2 finals, which this year took place at the Gemtec Arena in Hull. Milton Keynes based Kingston Kites Trampoline Club were represented by no fewer than 6 performers over the two days of competition.

On Saturday, Nicolas Winther and and Synchro partner Matthew Wright got things off to a flying start by winning the Under 19 boys event to become 2006 National Champions. Matthew then teamed up with Luke Rendell from the Olga Trampoline Club in Poole, for the Senior Men’s competition, which included our representatives at the World Cup. Luke and Matthew both jumped well, eventually finishing on the podium in 3rd place overall, and even beat our international pair in the process.

In the Under 17 girls event, Kingston Kites were represented by Laura Wright. Laura had lost her intended partner to injury at the last minute, but the competition organisers were able to find a substitute, so together with Sarah Bartlett from Loughborough, Laura was able to complete. The pair gelled quickly, reaching the final, eventually finishing in 7th place. No mean achievement for a paring that had not even met until that very morning!

Sunday saw the individual National Grade 2 competitions. Dayle Walker produced two excellent routines, in spite of a recent wrist injury, to come 14th out of 32 in the Under 11 Girls.  She has made a tremendous start to her trampolining career and performed extremely well in her first year of competition.

Competing in the Under 15 girls, Evie Rush, in her second year of competition, completed two superb routines to achieve 16th place out of 36, beating her last years position.  Evie is very talented and we are expecting great results from her in the future.

In the Under 17 girls Laura Wright produced three amazing routines, jumping at her very best.  After the compulsory routine she was in second place and maintained that position.  In the final, Laura performed another fabulous routine, and with her full difficulty tariff of 7.0, she received an overall score of 84.6, which took her into first place and with it the title of Under 17 Girls National Champion.

Then, to complete a superb weekend for the “Kites”, Jenny Hardy won the Over 19 Ladies event by a massive 3.8 marks to make it a hat trick of National titles for the club. She produced a superb compulsory routine to take the lead.  Using the maximum 7 mark tariff, a wonderful voluntary routine stretched her lead to 2.3 marks going into the final. Jenny’s total score of 86.8 was the highest by anyone on the day.

David Ward-Hunt Cup 2006 - Gillingham

Kites Gain International Success!

(MK Citizen article 5th Nov. 2006)

Five top performers from the Kingston Kites Trampoline Club in Milton Keynes reached for the skies when they competed against over 600 trampoline gymnasts from 40 clubs and 10 other countries in the David Ward-Hunt Cup held in Gillingham, Kent last weekend.

Matthew Wright and his partner, Luke Rendell from Poole, formed a strong partnership in the men’s synchronised event. Although only 17, they confidently led a strong field of senior performers by a huge margin of 6.8 points after their first two rounds. During the finals which are zeroed under International rules, Matthew and Luke were overtaken by the narrowest margins of 0.1 and took second place.

Matthew then took on the men in the individual event. Performing his most difficult voluntary routine so far (tariff 13.2), he qualified for the final in fifth position.  Undeterred by the prospect of competing against senior international gymnasts, including Gary Smith who came sixth for GB in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Matthew completed a stunning final routine to win the competition.

Nicolas Winther competed for the first time in the men’s senior event and followed his 6th place at this year’s British National Championships with a well deserved 10th in this strong international field.

For the girls this was their first experience of international competition and they faced a daunting entry of 108 junior female gymnasts. Laura Wright’s determination paid off when she achieved a creditable 25th place with her successful new voluntary routine, combining a half out, and a straight back somersault. Billie Murphy demonstrated the value of superb form by performing one of the best set routines of the day, putting her in 30th place. Sophie Myers overcame considerable nerves to complete the tricky ‘Rudolph’ move and finish 75th overall. Together, Sophie and Laura synchronised their set and voluntary routines with accuracy and style to finish in 10th place in the junior girls Synchro competition.

Grade 2,  Macclesfield, May 2006

Kingston Kites trampolinists continued their success at the Grade 2 National Competition held in Macclesfield last weekend.

Laura Wright and Carla Greenwood faced 50 other gymnasts in the Under 17 age group. Laura made a strong start in her compulsory routine and lay in 3rd place after her voluntary. It was her clean form that took Laura into the lead in the finals, clinching not only first place overall, but also qualification for the British Grade 2 National Championships in November. Carla also achieved a promising 8th place in the final in her first Grade 2 competition.

Dayle Walker, under 9, and Michael Bunyan, under 13, also made encouraging progress, each finishing in 6th place in their respective events.

Cara Stubbs mastered the challenges of her new routine to compete in the Under 19 event, and Evie Rush jumped confidently, finishing well in the top half of a field of over 60 under 15 girls.
